5/3/2021 Fair Trade
In the real world, the practice of "validating" the child is moot. The child is valid because the child exists, and no one is telling the child they are worthless because no one is making the child compete in rigged competitions. No one is forcing these rigged competitions because the parent is not expected to single-handedly meet all the demands of raising the child.
When the children are pitted against one another in ball-catching games ("okay! Whoever catches this ball gets 100 points!"), running and bicycle races ("who can go to the end of the block the fastest?"), and house-keeping competitions ("who can pick up the most toys in two minutes?"), the well-intentioned practice of acknowledging their feelings and validating them is completely undermined. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. In these micro-transactions that are made over and over and over and over and over again, an exchange is made: the child's psychological well-being for a moment's peace. But the trade cheats the child by far and away. Because they are children and still in development, an imprint is made from which the child begins to form their understanding of the world. From this understanding, they develop various personality traits according to how this understanding affects them psychologically. These personality traits, mind you, did not arise naturally. They came about as a reaction to the new understanding which came from the situation into which the adult forced them. At the time, they trusted the adult, so they didn't question why they raced against their siblings to the end of the block and back, they just did it for love of the adult. At the end of it, the older, faster siblings claim victory and shame the younger siblings so that they can get their own reward: one fleeting moment of the victor feeling valuable in exchange for decades of the victim feeling inadequate. The skill of negotiating unfair trades has already begun to develop for them. The adult gains one moment of mental health at the expense of several decades of psycholigical turmoil for the child. 5/2/2021 Metaphoreality
